Inflation up 26 % in May

The Central Bank has discontinued from this month issuing the old Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI) which hit almost 30 percent inflation in April.

Instead the Bank on Friday issued only the CCPI (new) index collated by the Census & Statistics Department in which inflation in May rose to 26.2 percent from May 2007 on a year-on-year basis. Officials said they were discontinuing issuing the old index igures.

Inflation hit an all-time high when it peaked at a near 30 percent in April, according to the old CCPH index, up from 28.1 percent in March.
