Why courier firms
are necessary
Mr. P. Herbert Mendis of Boosa has written to The Sunday Times claiming that some 30 private firms have registered as courier companies to distribute letters within the country, even though the Postal Department holds the monopoly for the distribution of letters.
I am impelled to explain why it has been deemed necessary for private firms to register as couriers: it is because the Postal Department is inefficient, and because some Postal Department staff resort to stealing magazines sent through the post.
Before the Postal Department considers taking legal action against courier companies, it should first take action against its inefficient and dishonest employees.
