‘Careyites Con Brio’

The 'Careyites Con Brio', the brass band Concert organised by Carey College is scheduled to be held at the BMICH on Thursaday, June 5 from 3.00 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. and would be an evening of entertainment. 'Careyites Con Brio' will feature Carey College Brass Band along with several other invited school brass bands. The invited Schools are Musaeus College, Bishops College, Devi Balika, Viharamahadevi Balika, Kiribathgoda, Yoshodara Balika, St. Paul’s, Milagiriya, Royal College, St. Peter’s, St. Benedict’s and St. Sebestian’s College, Moratuwa.

Carey College Brass Band was formed in 2001 as a Ten Instrumental Band. It contained 2 Trumpets, 2 Cornets, 2 Trombones, 1 Euphonium, 2 Side Drums and 1 Bass Drum. The Principal E.W. Wijesinghe having listened to this Ten-piece outfit was thrilled by the music and decided to purchase more instruments such as Alto and Tenor Saxophones including additional Trumpets and Trombones. Carey College Brass Band comprises Suresh Vandebona (band leader), Anaz Anver (asst. band leader), Trumpeters: Sriyan de Silva, Arshad Hathy, Ishfaaq Imthiyaz, Supun Wijayaboparathne, Ayaz Sheriff, Ishara Kulasooriya, Shahid Sampan, Tharidu Kariyawasam, Damian Reid, Achintha Wanigasekara.

Trombone Players: Manoj Malasooriyage, Mirzab Sheriffdeen, Rajitha Tennekoon, Salman Moiez, Dilan Abeyweera, Dewshan Gnanakan, Jeewantha. Euphonium Players: Gihan Abeysekera, Nibras Nizam, Thilina Nelson, John Ganakan. Alto Saxophonists: H.K. Lakshan Charuka, Daniel Alexander, Sachith Samarasinghe. Tenor Saxophonists: Fazmy Buhari, Vidura Herath.

Side Drummers: Imran Hossen, Supun Dorage, Sisila Wikramaarachchi, Jithendra Vidyapathy. Bass Drummers: Anaz Anver, Cymbals/Tambourine/Maracas : Viraj Fernando and Eranga Wijesekara on Piano. 'An old boy Thilanka Gamlath was kind enough to donate 2 Saxophones. Today the Band comprises 35 members and has gained 8 years of experience in the field of music' said Suresh. The Band plays English, Sinhala and Hindi songs. The Carey Brass Band has performed at School Carnivals, College Sundays, Sports Meets, Circuit Meets, Prize Givings, Walks and at several Displays organized by other School Bands.

The Teacher-in-Charge is Mrs. Shanthi Vandebona and the Band Master Ranjith Navaratne. The music of the Band is of a high standard due to the encouragement given by the Principal. The Music Teacher Shanthi Vandebona has been in the college for over 25 years and has been able to maintain the standard of the band by encouraging the students and is very particular about attendance. The Band Master Navaratne who is an expert in music and in brass instruments who retired from the Navy Band is with us for the past 8 years. He puts in a lot of effort in coaching the students and has been able to produce good musicians.
