It is very discouraging to see our elders not being an example to the younger generation, but very encouraging to see us, younger generation trying to be an example.
Weekly garbage collectors visit houses. We could leave the garbage outside the house in an orderly way for collection. Further improvement could be done by segregating the garbage into biodegradables and non-biodegradables. We could visit the Municipal Council and hand over the recycling material.
We as children could devote our time for gardening, where we could plant herbs like gotukola, mukunuwenna, karapincha. We could also plant fruits like guava and ambarella and also vegetables like chillies without any difficulty.
Leaf litter if collected at the house could be burnt by us involving a parent. Polythene bags brought to the house could be collected and made to reuse. When going shopping with our parents, we could take our own bag to reduce another bag.
If we come home by bus from school, we could pick up leaf litter on roadway and deposit it in a garbage bin. We could also reduce the use of aerosol sprayers at our house. This way we could protect the environment.
How I spend my leisure time
9 – 11 years
By Dasuni Yasodara
(10 years),
Lunuwila R.C. School
In the morning I go to school five days a week. After lunch I do my homework. During my leisure hours I attend to some creative work.
My first choice is drawing. I like nature. Therefore I have drawn many pictures of birds, animals, forests, rivers, lakes full of flowers etc. I have won prizes and certificates in art exhibitions.
My second leisure activity is gardening. Every evening I do gardening with my friends in the children's home. There is ample space for
gardening. I have prepared some vegetable beds. I have planted snake gourd, capsicum, bitter gourd, brinjals and some green leaves for salads.
I use compost manure for all these things. I enjoy very much by watching my beautiful garden in the morning and in the evening.
