Funday Times - A Poem for the week

The marble statue
By Gaya Samarakoon (13+ years), Visakha Vidyalaya

It stands elegantly, proudly,
Beautifully shaped and finely carved,
Clad in a snow white dress,
The eyes of sapphire shining in the light.

Yet, how can arms of marble fondle?
How can a heart of lead love?
How can a mind of granite know pity?
How can lips of stone smile, oh, how?

How can a heart of hard metal have fears?
How can ears of marble, hear the cries of people?
How can eyes of gems shed tears?
What use, the elegance, the beauty, now?
