As their name suggests, their music has everything to do with sound and rhythm.
In 2007, Rakitha Wickramaratne, Gayan Manokumara, Udhdala Iroshan, Pabalu Wijegoonewardene, Nalinda Peiris and Ranga Nuwantha came together to form Naadro.
Playing only percussion, the band has a unique sound, with a Sri Lankan flavour as well as traditional Indian, African and Latin Music. Friendship, along with a common love of rhythm and sounds brought these six artistes- three of whom are university students – together to bring their own flavour into the local music industry. Establishing ourselves as a band wasn't too much of a challenge," said Rakitha Wickramarante, the leader of Naadro, recalling the time when their band had just entered the local music scene.
We played at a few gigs and functions – this is what brought us into the limelight. We do not have a very large audience, as there aren't many people who really appreciate this genre of music. Still, our fans have been absolutely awesome and have seen us successfully through our first year!" The band plans on releasing its debut album- also titled Naadro, soon, in a vibrant concert cum CD launch to be held on August 12 at the BMICH at 7 pm.
The CD comprises of 10 songs, and the concert will also feature two guest artistes – Roni Benise – a flamenco guitarist from the US, and Indian flutist Bikram Jit. |
