The colourfully decked elephants are one of the biggest attractions of the annual Kandy Esala Perahera, but the lack of a bathing place for these majestic beasts has proved to be an unresolved problem.
Mahouts and owners of elephants say that a point at Lewella along the Mahaweli Ganga bank could be converted into a bathing place for the more than 70 odd elephants that gather for the perahera but no steps have been taken regarding it.
At present these gentle giants are being bathed utilizing hoses in the vicinity of the Maligawa.Veterinarians say it is essential that these animals are bathed daily to prevent them from running amok when they parade the streets. |
