Taxed from all sides

By Mohamed Nalim, Colombo 9

The consumer is being taxed to the maximum. The increased fuel charges are understandable, but the fixed charges levied on our electricity and water bills have no relevance at all. When these charges (including VAT), as well as re-connection and other charges, are added together, the overall charge comes to more than the cost of the units consumed.

In addition, there is a late-payment charge. When payments are not settled on time, the services are disconnected. However, when there is a breakdown in services, the public is compelled to undergo great hardship while the authorities take their own time to restore normal services.

This is very unfair, especially when we are all reeling under the impact of the ever-increasing cost of living. At least some sort of relief should be meted out to the consumer, who is being battered and bruised with extra expenses from all sides. Is there no limit to these unfair cost increases?
