The doctors and nurses who work at the anti-rabies vaccination clinic (Room 23) of the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital deserve a bouquet of appreciation. I visited the clinic after my finger was bitten by our pet puppy, which had yet to be vaccinated against rabies.
After obtaining a ticket at the OPD, I was directed to Room 23. It was around 10.30 a.m. and the crowd had thinned out. The lady doctor who examined my finger advised me to get the anti-rabies vaccine, as the puppy was not immunized. My plea that the puppy's mother was immunized was met with an explanation that immunity against rabies is not necessarily passed from mother to puppy.
Although some of the injections (about seven in all) were painful, the doctors and nurses administered them efficiently. They spoke to most patients as if they were friends. As I have often heard stories of how some patients have been treated shabbily at hospitals, I wish to commend the doctors and nurses of the ARV unit at Kalubowila Hospital. |
