The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) celebrating its 21st anniversary and in a bid to popularise the capital market organised a series of events islandwide on October 24. "The seminar organised by the Financial Services Academy of the SEC for both investors and potential investors in the securities market was a huge success," Channa de Silva, Director General SEC told The Sunday Times FT on the sidelines of a press conference last week.
Four awards were presented to the winners of the all island quiz programme at the press conference. Mr. de Silva said that this quiz programme was held in a bid to facilitate the awareness of financial literacy amongst students.
Y.W. Gunawardena, a capital market expert launched his book on investing, at the same venue.
A memorandum of understanding between the SEC and the eight national universities was signed to help the universities develop their curriculum for capital market development. “With this the universities will select a subject best related to the capital markets. The Financial Services Academy (FSA) will award a cash award together with a gold medal to the best performing students in the universities,” Dr. D.B.P.H. Dissa Bandara, Director FSA, a SEC-affiliated body providing professional level education related to the development of capital market and the insurance industry, said.
He noted that this was done in a bid to combine the multi-faceted approach of the FSA which merges education, research and advisory services.
Mr. de Silva said that the launching of the Capital Market Information Centre at the Sri Jayawardanepura University which also took place on the day was also done in a bid to facilitate the awareness of financial literacy amongst students. |
