'Great Expectation', 1946 British film based on Charles Dickens literary classic will be screened on Friday Movie Mix on Rupavahini at 9.30 pm on November 28.
Directed by David Lean it stars John Mills, Valerie Hobson, Finlay Currie, Martita Hunt, and Alec Guinness. ‘Great Expectation’ was the first of two films Lean directed based on Dickens' novels, the other being his 1948 adaptation of Oliver Twist.
Lean brings Dickens' words to life in a series of memorable set-pieces: Pip's encounter with the convict Magwitch in the churchyard, beautifully foreshadowed by the grim and desolate establishing shots of the Kentish marshes; Pip's first meeting with the eccentric Miss Havisham, and the macabre atmosphere in the offices of Mr. Jaggers, the lawyer whose walls are decorated with the death masks of clients he has lost to the gallows.
The film won Academy Awards for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Black-and-White and Best Cinematography, Black-and-White, and was nominated for Best Director, Best Picture and Best Writing, Screenplay. The script was written by Anthony Havelock-Allan, David Lean, Cecil McGivern, Ronald Neame and Kay Walsh, and the film was produced by Ronald Neame and photographed by Guy Green.
