Working in close association with Griffith University, Queensland Institute of Business and Technology (QIBT) offers Diplomas in Biosciences, Commerce, Engineering, Information Technology, Hotel Management and Design Studies, which are identical to the first year of the respective Griffith University degree programmer. Upon successful completion of a Diploma at QIBT, students are guaranteed entry with full first year exemptions into second year at Griffith University and several other universities throughout Australia.
QIBT's location on Griffith University's Mt Gravatt campus enables Diploma level students to interact with university students and lecturers to become familiar with university life prior to studying at university level. QIBT's students also have full access to university facilities including libraries, 24 hour computer laboratories and sporting amenities. On-campus accommodation is available to QIBT students, offering international students an affordable and convenient lifestyle whilst they concentrate on their studies.
Miss Inoka Wijegunaratne from Moratuwa chose QIBT to study her Diploma of Commerce at QIBT because it allowed her to complete her diploma in one year, and go straight into second year at Griffith University. Miss Wijegunaratne's told us "Academic staff at QIBT always encourage students to express themselves confidently which is an important requirement for our future careers. If it wasn't for the support and encouragement given to me by my lecturers, I would not have been able to get high distinction for all my subjects."
QIBT's nurturing and supportive ethos ensures that lectures are small and specialized, with a maximum class size of 40 students. Counselling, study and learning support services are also provided to assist students in achieving their goals. "Through my Diploma of Commerce programmer I learnt about structuring assignments, expressing my ideas with confidence and giving presentations. Lectures, tutors and the Academic Advisor were an inspiration and gave me strength to achieve my goals" says Miss Wijegunaratne.
Miss Wijegunaratne happily tells us that living in Brisbane is really a lot of fun. She says "the Australian people are very friendly and everything here is very easy going - even the weather is always nice! "
Miss Wijegunaratne is about to finish the second year of her Griffith University Bachelor of Commerce and tells us her time at QIBT prepared her well for university studies. Having arrived in Australia in 2007, she will graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce in 2009. She hopes to work in the finance sector when she returns home to Sri Lanka.
