Kandy and its suburbs have been identified as the second most LTTE-threatened area after Colombo, according to intelligence reports.
DIG Central Province Pujith Jayasundara said police recently arrested 115 persons during raids in the Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya areas. Information gathered from three of the arrested persons led to the recovery of 500 kilograms of C4 explosives and four claymore mines.
In another case, a person caught transporting a large quantity of explosives by lorry admitted to previously transporting some 1,000 kgs of explosives to Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya.
DIG Jayasundara said the police had reason to believe that a suicide squad of 11 LTTE cadres were living in the Kandy area. As part of its precautionary measures, the Central Province DIG’s office has deployed a top team of security personnel with counter-terrorist training. |
