Natasha Fernandopulle catches up with Saheli Gamage on the launch of a first CD
It is not often you hear of a 20-year-old having a love for classical music – a love enough to launch a CD. Well, stepping out of the norm, on December 4, 2008, Saheli Gamage (20) will launching 'Saheli' – a noteworthy album of tasteful music.
Saheli had a great love for music from the tender age of four and upon finishing her A/ Levels, she completed a Visharath in December last year, which is a six year degree in classical music, which she passed out with honours.
However her taste in music is not limited to just classical music – she has a love for Western and Karnatak music as well. Her CD comprises of songs in Sinhala and a Hindi song too. "I like Hindi, that's why I came up with the idea," she says, adding that when studying Indian music, she had to learn Hindi as well.
"As much as I love classical music, I also like all other types of music," and the CD is a testament to that, as each song is something different along with a fusion of eastern and western music. "My favourite artistes include Amarasiri Peiris, Udith Narayan, Sonu Nigam and Parvina Sultan," she said.
Saheli was a student at Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya and is currently in her first year and reading for a degree in Medicine at the American National College and hopes to specialise in music therapy as she wants to help in the rehabilitation and treatment of cancer patients.
It is her love for music, the support of her of her family, friends and her teacher that has helped her launch her CD, which took her three months to record. 'Saheli' will be launched on Thursday December 4, at 6.30pm at the Elphinston Theatre. N.F. |
