It was a burst of dance and music and a whole bunch of young kids creating art using their various talents at the Mahanama College Auditorium last Friday. The talent show entertained winners from a series of talent competitions organised by the Royal Institute School. Twenty five items were chosen to dazzle the public with a show filled with energy from the junior, intermediate and senior students of Royal Institute.
The talents of the students were focussed on dance and music and singing. The show organized by the Music Society of Royal Institute is the fifth of its kind. The two popular young artistes and guests for the evening, dancer, Hashini Gonagala and singer, Umariya Singhavansa got the audience hyped and held their interests. Umariya said she felt that there was a great show of young talent and it was a pleasure to perform for the people that day.
However the highlight of the show was the closing with a hip hop dance track and songs performed by a band from the senior school, 'Trivium,' where the music was directed by a 16-year-old. The young music director is a student in the school, and was Radeesh Randabona. He started helping his musician father when he was 12 and he has had much practice in the field now, he says.
The seniors put on a show that was almost professional with their hip hop dancing included hand stands, ghetto costumes and the singing of covers of well known hip hop songs that got the audience involved as well. But apart from all the rap music, there was also a solo guitar performance, dancing and vocal performances in the line up of items.
The talent competition had started a month back, a student, Supun Liyanarachchi, said with it being a bit tough to make time for the group practices, as they tried to meet up every Saturday for a month with no classes.
As the celebration of young talent continued throughout the evening with performances ranging from Bharatha Natyam to hip hop dancing by the juniors, this too added flavour to this versatile show. Added to all of these items, the junior and intermediate school put on a very good show of tabla, organ and violin playing.
The president of the Music Society, Pasan Athurugiriya, said that it was all the hard work by the students, teachers and the support from the parents that helped a lot, especially since "we had only two weeks to prepare the show."
The show couldn't have happened without the help of their Principal, music teachers and organiser Vajira Weerasinghe, Chandrani Jayaweera and Sandun Gunawardena. Their dance instructors, Sanamali Silva and Kalpani Ranasinghe and the students thank them all. |
