In the summer of 2008 the Dissa's of Scholarships fame to America visited the Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. They dis-covered in this small, safe Midwestern city a beautiful campus and helpful International Student Services office.
They assisted Thanya Fernando with her application to Ashland University in the early fall. The Dissa's, and Thanya, were most impressed by the Master of Business Administration programme. It is set apart because it does not require the GMAT. Applicants must have two years of work experience, and are eligible to participate in the Required Work Experience programme, which permits them to obtain part-time employment off-campus as part of their degree require-ments.
Thanya arrived during one of the coldest months of the year, in January of 2009. But even though the temperatures was below freezing, the busyness of getting settled in a new country kept her warm. Thanya attended new student orientation, met with the MBA directors, found housing with the help of her mother and even gave a presentation about Sri Lanka to the campus community.
Thanya still has to decide which field in the MBA programme she might pursue: Project Management, Global Business, Entrepreneurship, Human Resource or Finance, but she is well on her way to a new life in Ohio. It is a place where her name was known before her arrival, and her face is now a welcome sight.
