She brewed sob stories to collect a small fortune

By W.P.Weerawardena, Our Airport Corr.

A Sri Lankan woman, employed in Israel, who is suspected of having made a fortune by relating sob stories about her plight and collecting money and also by committing robbery from fellow domestic workers several times, was arrested by Katunayake Airport police on arriving in the country.

Following nine complaints received from Sri Lanka as well from Israel, Airport Police chief inspector Eric Perera had made investigations. The suspect, a resident from Gonahena, Kadawatha who had allegedly committed fraud several times was taken into custody for questioning when she was returning to the country.

On interrogation the woman confessed to the crimes she had committed. She had transferred a large sum of money to an NRFC account and had jewellery worth millions of rupees with her, police said.

Police said the woman had pleaded for money from her colleagues giving personal reasons. She had come up with false reasons to get the sympathy of fellow workers resident in several other hostels.

The suspect was produced in court and was ordered by Negombo Chief Magistrate Jayaki Alwis to be remanded.
