A private security firm is offering ‘sniffer’ dogs to detect explosives, the first time such a service is available in Sri Lanka.
Crown Security Service Managing Director Ajith Kangaraarachchi said with the present security situation, the government cannot handle security in the private sector. “This project was launched by identifying the present need and at the requests of our clients,” he said. Sniffer dogs are commonly used by private security companies in many countries.
In Sri Lanka only the security forces and the police use trained dogs to detect explosives, for other threats and nabbing suspects in public places. The two dogs - Labrador Retriever and English Spaniel dogs -- have been used during hunting and fishing expeditions in the past and they are very obedient to their handler.
The dogs are trained by qualified and experienced ex-Air Force and Police dog handlers.
