Go back in mind to a time in life where you learned some thing very easily. Are you standing or seated? Are you on a chair, table, and bed or on the floor? Are you outdoor or indoor? If indoor and seated, are your feet touching the ground or are they up on a chair or table. If on bed, are you lying on your back or face up? Do you hear any music? I've questioned thousands of seminar participants and always got dissimilar answers. You may read best in bed, write best seated at a particular table and memorize best walking up and down. The environment you learn best may change with each subject. The environment you learn best is unique to you.
Discovering Your Optimum Learning Environment
1. Think of Your List of basic requirements:
A chair, a table, a bed, a bookshelf, lighting, photos, paintings, certificates, plaques, music, plants, temperature, cushions and pillows.
2. Remember a time you learned best:
For some, this may be an orderly environment - a particular room, table, chair, quiet environment and a peaceful surrounding. For others it may be an informal environment - an easy chair, dining table, studying at different places, your bed, having people around, the radio or television playing in the background.
One of the above styles may suit you. Or you may use a combination of the above. Use whatever way you feel comfortable.
BUILDING YOUR EXPRESS LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Begin by selecting a place at home. Why? Because it's easy to change things the way you want, at home. Then you can use what you learned at home at school, hostel, and office and in any place. Find a table, chair, bed, easy chair, a rack. Keep arranging the furniture until you feel comfortable. The arrangement that gives you comfort, joy, peace, a feeling of correctness, is the arrangement that suits you. After a while, if you feel like changing continue to do so.
Your learning environment needs adequate and soothing light. Do you like the room to be lit equally or have light directed on the work area? Do you like facing a window or facing away from a window? Are you more comfortable with florescent light, CFL bulbs or ordinary warm white bulbs? Question your self now. Then decide on the combination that suits you best. Go to different places, offices, rooms, libraries and test what is best for you. Finally make up your mind and get what you want.
Pictures, certificates, mementos, photographs and phrases will motivate you and make you feel empowered. The following will increase your motivation to learn fast.
- Begin whatever you can do and whatever you can dream of
- I learn from every failure
- I am happy and proud to be my self
- Courage contains wonder, power and miracle
- Every day in every way I am learning better and better
Read the above a few times. Select those that touch your heart most and display them in your room.

What can you do now?
Begin somewhere. Make a few adjustments to your learning environment. Add one component a time and gradually develop your optimum learning environment. Why is this important? Because we all are made to understand that learning properly occurs by sitting at a desk for hours. While this may be true for some, it may not be true for you and you may hate sitting at a desk to study. Realize that there is an optimum learning environment for you. Discover it, develop it and use it.
