Don’t miss this family entertainment

By Megara Tegal

If you are on the look out for some wholesome family entertainment then 'Kids on Stage', a theatrical performance of plays and poems by children between the ages of 5 to 10 years directed by Shashi Mendis, could fit the bill.

Shashi Mendis

Shashi Mendis' directing credits include Blood Wedding, Moment in Time and Rhinoceros. Her most recent production, which she directed as well as performed in, was two plays from of Seneka Abeyratne's 2006 Gratiaen award winning collection, Three Star K.

As a drama school teacher for nearly a decade, Sashi has ample experience in working with kids but this is the first time she is working with so young a cast. 'Kids on Stage' consists of two main plays and a few poetry recitals as well as song and dance performances.

The main performances will be of Oscar Wilde's stories 'The Happy Prince' and 'The Selfish Giant'. Mentioning how well the children relate to the play, Shashi says that when she had asked the 10-year-old who plays the protagonist in Happy Prince why he liked his character, he had responded saying it was the Prince's caring and generous disposition that he was most fond of.

Kids on Stage will be performed at 6 p.m. on May 16 and 17 at the Punchi Theatre. Tickets are priced at Rs. 350 and Rs. 300 for balcony seats.

Some of the plays will be performed again on May 20 at 3:30 p.m. at the Ladies' College Hall in aid of the Young Women's Christian Association. This performance is titled "Plays and Poems".
