President to visit Myanmar

President Mahinda Rajapaksa is due to visit Myanmar shortly. He is scheduled to open a village re-built after the devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis in May 2008.

The funds for re-construction of the houses were raised by a Sri Lankan Buddhist monk. Meanwhile, President Rajapaksa yesterday in a message to mark the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Myanmar said the two countries shared common platforms at many regional and international fora.

“My visit to the Union of Myanmar this month and the numerous other activities planned to take place in our two countries as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations will further consolidate our bilateral relations,” he said.
