Provincial Council and Local government Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon yesterday vowed to carry on his campaign for President Mahinda Rajapaksa to continue as the President without fresh elections.
Mr. Tennakoon was reacting to comments by other ministers that President Rajapaksa had no intention of remaining in power without facing a Presidential election.

The other ministers reacted after the Sunday Times last week quoted Mr. Tennakoon as saying that the government intended to introduce constitutional amendments enabling President to continue without elections.
Mr. Tennakoon said those ministers were making comments against the move as they were not in a position to make straight forward comments as he was doing.
He said there was no necessity for a presidential election. “Even the President has not told me to stop this campaign. There is no use in wasting money for a presidential election campaign,” he said.
Meanwhile last Sunday, North Central Province Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake at a ceremony in Seruwila said President Rajapaksa would be the lifetime President. |
