It was an all Lyceum final when Lyceum College, Wattala met Lyceum College, Nugegoda in the International Schools’ Under 19 Tournament 2009 at Shalika Grounds on Friday.

Lyceum Wattala emerged champions when they managed to edge out the boys from Nugegoda in the final over of the game by five runs, in what turned out to be a fitting finale to an exciting
tournament.Lyceum Wattala were awarded the first lease of the wicket and got off to a poor start and were 4 wickets down for 40 runs at one stage, but some dogged batting by their middle order ensured that they stuttered to a score of 162 for 9 in the allotted 40 overs. S. Prabushitha top scored with a brave knock of 35 and V. Nadesan helped with 32. The Right arm off spinner N. Perera was the pick of the bowlers for the team from Nugegoda with figures of 3 for 22.

At this stage of the game this seemed to be a par score and the side which held their nerve could have won it from there.

The innings for Lyceum Nugegoda started off smoothly with M. Shezaard making 42 runs with some fine stroke play. He was well supported by A. Premadasa who made 33. Nugegoda had an achievable 10 runs to score of the last over from where they lost wickets at a rapid rate and ended up pulling defeat from the jaws of victory.

The celebrations begin

The spin twins from Wattala J. Pothupitiya and T. Tillekeratne had a combined haul of 6 wickets with medium paceman S. Rayyan chipping in with 2 scalps for good measure. Lyceum Nugegoda managed only 157 all out.
