‘Kanyavi’ salutes the role of woman

By Susitha R. Fernando

Experienced playwright, teledrama director and producer of a number of popular television programmes, B. Sirithunga Perera’s maiden cinematic creation ‘Kanyavi’ is now ready for release on the silver screen.

A story revolving around the timeless theme of family struggle will be released from next month on Ridma circuit cinemas including Regal Colombo.

Scripted 30 years ago, the film brings out problems between a husband and wife.

‘Though scripted three decades ago, this theme is still relevant to our society. This is an issue that has existed even from the time of Lord Buddha and will continue to exist even in the years to come,’ director Sirithunga Perera said.

“The family movie will also highlight the respected place of the woman who tolerates and bears all troubles in society,” ‘Kanyavi’ means a virgin and is accorded special status in our society and could even be found among the married, the director said referring to the title of his film.

My first love was cinema though I was involved in various other media of arts and I am grateful to my producer Indika Wijerathne, an engineer by profession who kept unswerving trust in my script.
A pupil of ‘Kala Pela’ started by veteran artiste G. D. L. Perera, Sirithunga started as a playwright. His play ‘Gamaneya’ had 500 shows around the country. Joining Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) Sirithunga produced a number of programmes including ‘Hada Rendi Gee’ through which he introduced a large number of talented singers and ‘Pooja’ a documentary on ancient places of Buddhist worship. He also directed the teledramas ‘Gimhana Sihina’, ‘Gawwen Gawwa’ and his latest ‘Handapana’ based on a W. A. Silva’s novel and which was made into a film in 1965 will be released soon.

The lead role with a powerful performance is played by Meena Kumari. “Meena gave life to the character that was in my script and I am 100% satisfied with her performance,” Sirithunga who expressed his gratitude to his whole cast and crew said.

The technical crew in ‘Kanyavi’ includes Kamal Thilakarathne as art director, Derick Fernando as makeup artiste, Stanley de Alwis as editor and K.D. Dayananda as cinematographer and Jayampathy Bopitiya as assistant director.

To the lyrics penned by Ajantha Ranasinghe and Upul Shantha Sannasgala, music was directed by late music maestro Premasiri Khemadasa and playback singing is by Amarasiri Peiris, Indika Upamali and Kasun Kalhara.
