Funday Times - Our History

The end of Jaya Bandara
This article is part of a continuing series on the ‘Mahavamsa,’ the recorded chronicle of Sri Lankan history

1. Time dragged on. The fighting did not stop. It became fierce, instead. Both were furious. No one, in the crowd could separate the two. They watched silently in surprise. Suddenly Prince Veediya Bandara jumped a few feet backwards, to dodge a powerful blow coming from Jaya Bandara. Though he was successful in avoiding the blow, the edge of the sword struck him and made a small wound. It began to bleed.

2. This doubled and trebled the anger of Veediya Bandara. He was frothing and fuming. His eyes went red. He took a few steps back, jumped up and struck a strong blow to Jaya Bandara. Though this prince tried to avoid the blow, he could not do so. It struck his chest straight away. Prince Jaya Bandara who was a warrior prince and a handsome youth, fell dead.

3. Prince Veediya Bandara frowned at the relatives of Jaya Bandara. They were unexpectedly silent, watching in fear. Veediya Bandara laughed loud, as if to insult them. No one uttered a word. The victorious prince, went back to his palace. Those who were gathered there, left the place. It took a while for Veediya Bandara to realize the gravity of his action.

4. King Buwanekabahu, by this time was very angry. He was fond of Jaya Bandara, like a son, and so he hated this act of killing him. Veediya Bandara got to know that the king was deeply upset. He realized that it was not safe to live in Kotte any further. He immediately left the palace and went away. He stopped to see the Chief Priest, Buddhawanse.

5. This High Priest was connected to the royal family and was a close relative of King Buwanekabhu. Even Veediya Bandara, according to the relationship was a nephew to him. The priest had a regard for the prince, especially for his bravery. He had been helping the prince in his childhood. The prince learned his letters under this priest. There were occasions, when the prince was punished by the priest for his
stubborn and unruly behavior.

6. Despite all this, the prince had a lot of respect for the priest. He always had faith in him. Whenever he did something wrong, he knew the priest would scold him but ultimately save him. Because of all this, he never uttered a word against the High Priest. Even when the priest scolded him thoroughly, he would only put his head down and listen in silence. On this day, he came to the temple of Rev. Buddhawanse, in utter fear.

7. By this time, Rev. Buddhawanse had not heard of the fate of Jaya Bandara. But the priest felt that Veediya Bandara would have come to him, after committing some offence. Acting intelligently, he did not want to question Veediya Bandara. The prince approached the priest, fell at his feet, worshipped him and sat on a side. The priest kept looking at his face.

8. "It is alright to worship me. But I am sure, you have come here, after committing some big offence. Alright, let us go to the dining hall," said the priest. He asked the prince to partake of whatever food available there. With bent head, Veediya Bandara entered the kitchen department of the
dining hall.
