Pix by Wasantha Chandrapala

The prevailing drought in the Ampara area has caused problems to man and beast alike. The number of elephants roaming the villages is increasing daily causing concern to villagers who have to put up with the menace. Up to now 17 elephants have died in the Wild Life ranges in the East. One man has been killed while there were 20 cases of loss of property. Thirsty animals roam the villages in search of water destroying plantations in the process and causing damage to houses of peasants. Pictures show one of the elephants which had sustained gunshot injuries fallen in a muddy patch of a small tank and (inset) Wild Life officials getting ready to treat the animal.
