Veediya Bandara flees
This article is part of a continuing series on the ‘Mahavamsa,’ the recorded chronicle of Sri Lankan history

1. Prince Veediya Bandara had not taken a proper meal for the last few days. Therefore he had a full meal in the 'Danasala'. He rested awhile to be relieved of the weariness of the long journey. The Chief Priest, observed all this in silence. After a while, he called the prince. The prince approached the priest, with his head bent down.

2. "Why did you come here, all of a sudden? You are in some big trouble aren't you? Tell me the truth," said the priest. Prince Veediya Bandara stood in the same pose and was still silent. This aroused the suspicion of the priest. Then in a loud voice, he asked him, "Why? Can't you hear me?" Then Prince Veediya Bandara poured out everything.

3. The Chief Priest was simply shocked. Prince Jaya Bandara was also a close relative of his and he was sad to hear of his death. He began to reprimand Veediya Bandara, very angrily. The prince did not utter a word. He still did not raise his head. The Chief Priest stopped his scolding and began to think. Minutes passed. Prince Veediya Bandara too stood in the same posture.

4. The Sangharaja priest's anger subsided. He felt sorry about the plight this prince had fallen into. At this time, a messenger from the royal palace of Kotte, came to the temple, carrying a message to the high priest. The pupil monks went to the Chief Priest to announce the arrival of the messenger. He asked the young priests to tell the messenger, to stay out for a while. He then sent Veediya Bandara from the back door.

5. The messenger was then brought in. He had come to inform the priest of the death of Prince Jaya Bandara. After conveying the message, he worshipped the priest and went away. Once again, he summoned Veediya Bandara and told him thus, "Now what has happened, has happened. You should learn to act with more patience. Do not go anywhere now. Stay in the temple, in hiding."

6. Prince Veediya Bandara bowed to him and accepted his advice. The Chief Priest Rev. Buddhawansa then went to Kotte. Days passed by. Prince Veediya Bandara was still in the temple. By this time, the pain and sorrow that King Buwanekabahu went through after the death of Jaya Bandara was gradually subsiding.

7. When the priest returned to the temple, he called Prince Veediya Bandara and asked him, "Are you still fond of Samudra Devi?" When the prince said "Yes", the priest did not say anything. He went to the Royal Palace of Kotte and first met the chief ministers. He explained matters to them and added that Prince Veediya Bandara had to be pardoned. They agreed. Then he went to meet the king. The king welcomed the priest, by paying him due respect.

8. The Sangharaja sat on a seat prepared for him. King Buwanekabahu sat on a side. The priest began to preach the 'Dhamma' to the king. The king listened attentively. The priest advised him in such a way as to enable him to be relieved of the pain he was still going through.
