A reputation for Quality Design Education
The Academy has earned a respected position and assumed a leadership role in the visual arts and design sector in Sri Lanka by acting as an educational resource and a cultural melting pot for creativity and diversity within Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan and international community has demonstrated its support for the design programmes offered at the Academy by providing internship opportunities for students, acting as guest jurors critiquing student work, and providing various live collaborative projects.
The curriculum for the degree programme consistent with the standards of education in the UK and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northumbria University is awarded upon successful completion of all the requirements of the individual programme.
Students learn among lecturers who are design professionals and who bring their background and current professional experiences to the Programme to ensure the highest quality of design education. The professional expertise of the Academy faculty adds tremendous value to both the classroom and studio settings. The curriculum blends the breadth of a university education with the practical value and insight gained from a professional programme.
The AOD curricula emphasize excellence that combines both contemporary and traditional methods of teaching so that students are equipped with the essential tools necessary to expand their ingenuity and become flourishing designers. Each of the three degree programmes - Graphic Design, Fashion Design, and Interior Design - reflect the structure, curricula, courses, and general requirements that are equivalent to those at the campus in Northumbria University, UK.
Fashion Design
Fashion is often synonymous with the catwalk, makeup, big hair, glamour, glittering show-biz parties, chunky shoes, and experimental outfits. But in reality, fashion is a mirror of its culture and world view. In all its beauty, fashion is a form of artistic expression: an international language. Simply stated, fashion has no national boundaries. It is a potent declaration of how one sees and represents oneself.
The fashion industry is a complex, multi-billion-dollar business encompassing design, production, distribution, and retailing. Fashion is the fourth largest industry in the world. Students in the Fashion Design Program at AOD partake in a distinctive opportunity to blend the rich history of Sri Lankan culture and traditions with the fashion industry of the 21st century.
Fashion design is far more than the crafting of beautiful clothing. Fashion involves footwear design, film makeup, theatre costumes, perfume design, jewellery design, sportswear, swimwear, formalwear, and casual wear design for men, women, and children.
Fashion students at AOD learn how to develop a fashion collection from concept to the finished product. The curriculum includes computer-assisted design, aesthetics, the theory of composition and colour, fashion history and a variety of business-related courses. It also includes studies in the marketing, merchandising and business management of clothing and accessories.
A professional runway show highlights the designs created by senior fashion students during the Annual Fashion Show. Students plan and produce all aspects of the annual fashion show, from inspiration to final execution. Each year the fashion show receives accolades from outside designers, the fashion press, guests and the community.
The Fashion Design Programme at AOD maintains close ties with the international fashion scene with various events and projects.
