This article is part of a continuing series on the ‘Mahavamsa,’ the recorded chronicle of Sri Lankan history
By Halaliye Karunathilake, Edited and translated by Kamala Silva, Illustrated by Saman Kalubowila

1. Veediya Bandara's eyes turned red with rage. Samudradevi was trembling in the face of death. A moment passed. All of a sudden, Veediya Bandara jumped on Samudradevi and held her by her neck. She howled in fear. But the hard heart of the prince was not moved at all. For a couple of minutes, Devi struggled and tried to escape death.

2. However, it looked as if Veediya Bandara was holding tight to his victim. He did not loosen his grip. Instead, he squeezed her neck. Gradually, Samudra devi was losing all her strength. The prince promptly held her tight with all his strength and pushed the beautiful princess of Kotte into the Diyawanna Oya. Devi was caught in the current and circling around in the muddy water. She tried her best to save her life. She fought to the last. It is with anger, that Veediya Bandara watched her struggle. Gr Gradually, his anger subsided. The prince began to reminisce about the past.

His eyes were getting wet with tears. The end of Devi's life was fast approaching. All her physical strength was wasted. She was caught in a current and was dragged deep down. For a long time, she did not come up. Then Veediya Bandara moved away from the bank. Silently, he walked back. He kept to himself for a few days. He was sad and terribly shaken.

4. Veediya Bandara was thinking of the good qualities and beauty of Samudradevi. Repeating all her good qualities, to himself, he sobbed bitterly. By this time, the entire Kingdom of Kotte had got to know the fate that befell Samudradevi. The citizens were worried. The entire palace was shaken up. It was one big 'funeral'. The maids and all other employees were weeping, singing the praises of Devi. King Buwanekabahu was mad with rage and sorrow. He began to mutter to himself as if he was deranged.

5. He said he would take revenge on Veediya Bandara. This was not the first instance, that Veediya Bandara had hurt the king in this manner. He had killed Jaya Bandara, who was brought up by the king as a son. On that occasion too, the king was deeply grieved. If the king gave him a proper punishment then, this tragedy would not have occurred. As the king contemplated in this manner, his anger grew. He called one of his men.

6. “Go immediately and bring Veediya Bandara to the palace,” commanded the king. He went and gave this message to Veediya Bandara. As Veediya Bandara felt suspicious, he did not obey the order. He sent back the royal messenger and fled from the city of Kotte. By this time, the relatives of Jaya Bandara, were on Mayadunne's side. They were very angry with King Buwanekabahu. The Zamorin too had made friends with King Mayadunne and had even sent some troops to help Mayadunne.

7. That was to fight the Portuguese again. The commanders of these foreign regiments were Pachi Markar and Kunhale Markar by name. They were very clever warriors, who had earned their name in battles, both at sea and on land. King Mayadunne was highly pleased with these troops. He organized his army too. All preparations were carried out, in sunshine and rain. The armies left Sitawaka.

8. Mayadunne, accompanied by local and foreign armies, then besieged the city of Kotte. King Buwanekabahu was helpless. He then sought the help of Veediya Bandara. He sent his envoys to trace Veediya Bandara and bring him back from his hiding place. They went and found Veediya Bandara. They described all that was taking place. They brought Veediya Bandara back to the palace. King Buwanekabahu pardoned him and re-appointed him as the Commander-in-Chief.
