Secretary to the Ministry of Post & Telecommunication Mr. Chandra Jayathilake said, "This is a groundbreaking initiative involving for the first time ever a telecommunications company and the national Postal department joining hands to offer a service of this nature to customers." He added, "In today's fast- paced world where constant connectivity is vital, this unique partnership will no doubt be of great value to us as consumers."
Chairperson Sri Lanka Telecom and Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel Leisha De Silva Chandrasena commented, "Sri Lanka Post with over 200 years in Postal services has been crucial in this partnership with Mobitel. We at Mobitel are particularly proud and honoured of our relationships as national entities who are pioneers in the respective services they offer and would like to express our sincere gratitude to Sri Lanka Post and to the registered postmen, without whom, this original service could not be made possible."
"Postmaster General M.K.B Dissanayake speaking on the initiative said, "Sri Lanka Post looks forward to working together with Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel as a new distribution channel partner. We are proud to be a part of a service which has not been offered previously, anywhere in the world. Sri Lanka Post eagerly looks forward to serve the Kaluthara district and we hope to rapidly expand this service island-wide in the near future."
Plans to develop this distribution network on an island-wide scale are currently in progress with the same facilities to be made available to more SMART users in 2010. Sri Lanka Post assures that the 250 Postmen in estate post offices will also enable the company to reach out to customers in estate areas like Nuwara Eliya where retail outlets are relatively fewer and harder to access. Mobitel is also looking into the possibility of offering the service in many untapped geographical areas including those in the North and East.
