Thieves steal infamous Auschwitz death camp sign

WARSAW, Dec 19, (AFP) -Polish police Saturday were hunting for thieves who stole the infamous Nazi German “Arbeit macht frei” sign from the entrance to the Auschwitz death camp in Poland, sparking outrage around the world.

The sign, which means “Work Will Set You Free”, came to symbolise the horror of the camp where some 1.1 million mainly Jewish prisoners died during World War II, some from overwork and starvation but most in the gas chambers.

As rewards were offered totalling more than 25,000 euros for information, police said they believed the theft Friday may have been ordered by a private collector or a group of individuals.
