The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) has taken steps to improve and widen its services to Sri Lankan teachers and students through the LAMDA Examinations, Sri Lanka office.
LAMDA examinations have been growing in popularity in Sri Lanka over the last few years. The local office, in addition to providing more support who are already involved with LAMDA examinations will provide opportunities for more teachers and pupils island wide, to develop their music and dramatic art skills.
LAMDA is famous for two things: for being one of the leading drama schools in the English- speaking world, and for conducting the most eminent set of public examinations in its sector. In English theatre, most cast lists consist of LAMDA alumni. Many students studying in independent schools in the UK have the opportunity to go for a LAMDA gold medal. The institutions that combined to form the Academy date from 1861, which makes the Academy is the oldest of its kind.
LAMDA is dedicated to the creative, intellectual and social development of the individual as a whole. It is for this reason that LAMDA has become the largest and most successful Speech and Drama Board in the United Kingdom. Its examination system also has a reputation for excellence across Europe, the Far East, the Middle East, Africa and the United States so that candidates can measure their progress against an internationally applied standard. LAMDA Examinations is also accredited as an Awarding Body by The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) and the corresponding regulatory authorities in Wales and Northern Ireland.
Among many initiatives planned for Sri Lanka are regular teacher training workshops by visiting British specialists, curriculum support to schools, new qualifications and two examination cycles a year. They are also pleased to launch the LAMDA Teacher's Certificate in Communication, an exciting specialist qualification for teachers, which has been designed to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding required to teach introductory communication skills, speech and drama to young children and adults. LAMDA EXAMINATIONS
As an educational organization that leads in the field of theatre arts and the spoken word, LAMDA maintains that the development and use of communication and language are at the heart of a child's learning. All examinations provide a framework for learning, with achievable and measurable goals at each stage of the process.
LAMDA offers examinations in speech and drama, designed to help develop communication, language and literacy skills. These examinations provide a platform for children and young people to gain confidence, work as a team, hold a conversation and participate more fully in their society. They also provide teachers with an opportunity to motivate and engage their pupils.
The LAMDA Introductory examinations for 5-7 year-olds help develop communication skills, encourage confidence and provide an exciting introduction to reading and poetry.
The Performance examinations can provide vocational pathways to work in acting, theatre, musical theatre and the teaching of performing arts, as well as the opportunity for personal development through a wide spectrum of interests. The new Musical Theatre examinations are only for actors and singers, and are designed to assess a candidate's ability to use the voice both as a tool and to assist in the delivery of a strong and believable performance.
LAMDA's Communication examinations, particularly in Spoken English and Public Speaking, help students prepare for interviews, make presentations and provide a platform for those careers where such skills are important.
The examination system has been designed to equip candidates, whatever their age and aspirations, with a range of skills that will serve them throughout life. Preparation for an examination can unlock the imagination, foster an appreciation in literature, develop
communication skills and refine technical artistry.
The LAMDA Teacher's Certificate in Communication
LAMDA is pleased to launch an exciting specialist qualification in January 2010 which has been designed to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding required to teach introductory communication skills, speech and drama to young children and adults.
Although LAMDA does not require teachers of speech and drama to hold any particular qualification in order to deliver their specifications or syllabus in the classroom, they do emphasise the importance of proficiency and competency in speech and drama education when teaching.
The LAMDA Teacher's Certificate in Communication offers a programme of study which reflects the complex role of the teacher in the sector, combining theory with practical exercises and tasks.
More specifically, candidates will engage with the technical and artistic knowledge required for working with speech and drama at pre-school / lower primary level and basic level for all age ranges, as well as the practical skills required for planning sessions, teaching and assessing students.
The certificate is suitable for teachers holding a general teacher qualification wishing to develop specialised skills or for those who are already teaching but are seeking their first teacher certificate.
