One’s creativity can lead him to develop his own unique occupation. Independence, creativeness and introducing untapped are the keys to the success of ‘Yovunma’ created by Ubhaya Bandara. Painter, layout designer and creative artiste, Bandara’s vocation is somewhat different to most of us. His aim is to support couples who are waiting to have their ‘dream wedding’.

Bandara’s support is shared from creating unique wedding invitations up to preparing cake boxes. Started in 2000, it was a result of years’ experiences both here and abroad and in a variety of fields.

“Even as a child I had the ability to turn anything that I came across to a beautiful item,” says Bandara
Having studied at Kaikawela Central College, Matale and Wijepala Maha Vidyalaya, Ubhaya Bandara won the first place at the Gam-Udawa art competition for three years consecutively from 1985, 1986 and 1987. However due to the political turmoil in 1989, Ubhaya Bandara had to be away from his creative journey yet he was able to go to India to get back to his creativity.

Ubhaya Bandara joined the hotel industry in India and worked as the Chief artiste of Taj Hotel in Bangalore from 1990 to 1995. Later on his return to Sri Lanka he joined the newspaper industry and worked as the Chief Layout designer of the Sunday Leader newspaper.

“I wanted to start a different type of business to use the creative ability and the result was ‘Yovunma’ in 2000. Started in Mount Lavinia, ‘Yovunma’ branches were opened in Pettah, Maharagama and Welisara,’ Ubhaya Bandara said proudly.

Ubhaya Bandara’s wedding invitation cards, invitation cards for any other occasions, cake boxes are not only popular in Sri Lanka but also in nearly ten countries including Canada, America, England and the Maldives where the latest Yovunma branch is going to be established.

“We are capable of making these invitations that suit different cultures and countries with different languages.

There is a good demand for Yovunma creations in Maldives’ Ubhaya said. There are nearly 50 employees working with us and in addition we always welcome creative young designers with creative talents.

‘This is more than a business and an attempt to extend out creative talents to other part of the world,’ he said. Anybody who wishes to join Yovunma with his or her creative designs can meet Ubhaya at No 314, Galle Road, Mount Lavinia.
