King Vickramabahu’s aim
By Halaliye Karunathilake, Edited and translated by Kamala Silva, Illustrated by Saman Kalubowila

1. The Portuguese leaders informed King Buwanekabahu of the request made by the clergy. The king ignored the matter. The Portuguese were so angered that they said they would not provide the promised protection to both the king and the yuvaraja. This too did not move the king. He kept quiet. When King Mayadunne learned of these developments, he got closer to his brother, King Buwanekabahu and showed a lot of concern.

2. That was his crafty nature. What he wanted was to be the king of the entire country. He wanted to annex the Kotte Kingdom to Sitawaka by whatever means. It is with this in mind that he fought with his brother, from the very beginning. He always failed. That failure was mainly due to King Buwanekabahu obtaining Portuguese help. Each time, King Mayadunne had to retreat. He lost in battle and suffered heavy damages too.

3. Furthermore, the Malabars, who came to his help, were also destroyed. The Malabar king was angry, because he let down the Malabars very badly. Considering all these unfortunate happenings of the past, King Mayadunne decided to make the best of this opportunity. On one hand, he tried his best to make the Portuguese angry with King Buwanekabahu and on the other hand, he poisoned the king's mind against the Portuguese.

4. In the meantime, he tried to annex even the Kandyan Kingdom to Sitawaka. King Vickramabahu of Kandy knew Mayadunne too well. He knew that Mayadunne suffered from an immense thirst for power. Once, when the princes of Kotte were rendered helpless, he was the one who came to their aid. On account of this dispute, King Vickramabahu stood to benefit. He was able to extend his kingdom.

5. This king was successful in annexing a number of regions that originally belonged to the Kotte Kingdom. The entire Vanni district was brought under Kandyan rule. Similarly Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Vellassa, Yalpana and the Seven Korales were brought under his rule. Just like King Mayadunne, he also had hopes of becoming the ruler of the entire country.

6. Therefore King Vickramabahu was always on guard and watchful for any opportunity. He knew that King Mayadunne was a power hungry king and he could not be trusted. By this time the Portuguese had a disagreement with King Buwanekabahu. This made King Vickramabahu very happy as he could use this situation for his own benefit.

7. He made arrangements to get a Portuguese officer to Kandy. He treated him well and both of them discussed how best to conduct trade relations between the Kandyan Kingdom and the Portuguese. They decided to use Trincomalee for this purpose. The Portuguese officer said that a trade store had to be put up in Trincomalee and for that, permission had to be obtained from the Viceroy in India. The King of Kandy agreed to this too.

8. Furthermore, the king agreed to pay tribute to Portugal. The Portuguese officer was only too happy about these developments and he returned to Colombo. Now King Buwanekabahu came to know about all these dealings and discussed matters with King Mayadunne. Both of them arrived at a decision.
