Sri Lanka Army’s Boxers performed exceptionally well during the year 2009 winning all major championships conducted by the Armature Boxing Association of Sri Lanka namely Clifford Cup, National Boxing Meet and Defence Services. Army was also awarded the Muththaiyah Zavior Shield which is given to the most successful Boxing Club.
Army Boxers secured major honours in the Layton Cup boxing meet held on 27, 28, 29 and 30 July 2009. They won the highest number of gold medals in the men’s category (five medals) as well as four Silver medals in five weight categories. The female Army boxers won three Gold medals. Corporal Niluka Karunarathne was named the Best Female Boxer in the Layton Cup meet.
Army then went on to win the Clifford Cup held on 21, 22, 23 and 24 August 2009.
They secured six Gold medals and six Silver medals in the men’s category and two Gold medals in women’s category.At the National Championship for men which was held on 13, 14, 15 and 16 October 2009 they convincingly beat out the competition, with the commanding Army team putting up 43 points to runner up Slimline’s score of 30 points. During the competition Army picked up five Gold medals and five silver medals. The Army women secured two Gold medals in the Nationals. |
