Deakin University, ably supported by Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) held a reception for alumni and friends of the university on Thursday, November 26 2009 at the Taj Samudra Hotel to thank them for the contributions they made to the university community.
The Chief Guest at the function was Mr M A R D Jayatillaka, Secretary to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources in Sri Lanka.
Prof Geoff Wescott, Associate Professor with the Faulty of Science and Technology of Deakin University was the keynote speaker at the reception and delivered a presentation titled "Meeting the challenges of global warming and tourism through integrated coastal zone management'.
The presentation proved very topical for the audience as Sri Lanka seeks to rebuild its tourism industry, and the presentation attracted much interest and generated a number of potential research collaborations.
The reception was well attended with Deakin University represented by Dr Dineli Mather, Associate Dean (International), Faculty of Science and Technology, and Mr Glen Meehan, International Marketing Manager for Deakin University, and officials from the Australian High Commission, local universities and institutions, international recruitment service providers, business community, and the government.
The event was part of Deakin University's commitment to contribute to and participate in the academic discussions taking place on important issues affecting the region and further strengthen its ties with Sri Lanka.
The event was organized by Deakin University and Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) in Colombo.
