The star tortoise is a very rare species found in and around the Kalpitiya lagoon and their type has even come into the red data book as an endangered variety of tortoises.

Residents here kill them for their meat despite it being illegal and two such offenders were arrested by the Kalpitiya police recently while transporting them in a three-wheeler.
The offenders had bypassed the police post at the Kalpitiya-Mampuri road and were going along a path with 14 of the rare species when they were detected.
