Customs officials have busted a racket involving several leading mobile service providers in the country who, by making bogus declarations of the type of communication equipment they were importing, have caused losses of up to Rs. 3200 million to State coffers in the past year.
The racket was busted recently after trailing the offenders for nearly a year, officials involved in the detection said.
Customs officials also seized around 30 containers with the equipment which were transmitting equipment incorporated with receiving equipment but were declared as telecommunication equipment parts.
“The Customs levies would have been 20 per cent higher had the correct declaration been made and hence a bogus declaration had been made taking advantage of the fact that many Customs officials have little technical knowledge about such equipment,” an official explained.
All the equipment had been provided by one supplier, the official added. |
