To womanhood we say thank you

Tomorrow is International Women’s Day

Over centuries and generations, women have played an important role,
A gift from God, be they young or old.
With poise, dignity and confidence they perform their tasks,
At times it’s rough, but they’ve got to be tough.

Eager they are to climb the ladder of success,
To break the glass ceiling is progress;
The world’s first woman Prime Minister was from Sri Lanka,
Our first woman President was none other than Chandrika.

Whether it’s Politics, Technology, the Law, Medicine or Administration,
Sports, Farming or Theatre, they do it to perfection.
Singers, Song Writers, Dramatists and Authors – they enter the Country’s Hall of Fame;
Their narratives, lyrics and sweet melodies will always remain.

They join the Armed Forces to give of their best,
With love to their country, no thought for regret.
Women have even made it into Outer Space;
And priestesses have earned their place.

Sadly, they must face abuse, harassment and humiliation;,
Let us to wipe out this menace;
Let us appreciate woman’s unique value and inner beauty.
To Womanhood we say Thank You,
You deserve the Best.

Antoinette de Cruze, Rajagiriya
