CWC blamed for attack on UNPers

Former National Organizer of the Ceylon National Congress, UNP candidate R. Yogarajan and his supporters were allegedly attacked at Mayfield Estate, Patana in Nuwara Eliya district on Friday evening with two persons being injured and several vehicles damaged.

Their vehicles were said to have come under attack by a politically inspired mob which pelted large stones at the vehicles returning from a meeting. That same night a member of the Lanka Jathika Estate Workers Union and his wife who organized the Friday meeting were reportedly assaulted and their house damaged. The wife is presently receiving medical treatment.

Meanwhile the District Chairman of the Lanka Jathika Estate Workers Union was also reported to have been assaulted needing hospitalization. Last Monday, vehicles carrying Mr. Yogarajan and his supporters were said to have been attacked by a similar group in Norwood Estate, Bogawantalawa.

“We have informed the Police immediately after the assaults and attacks took place but no action has been taken despite the numbers of the vehicles that carried the attackers were provided,” Mr. Yogarajan said.

He said that the CWC which is supposed to be a Gandhian movement is unfortunately now a party resorting to violence.
