I was prompted to write this after reading the article titled “Kalpitiya joins Lanka’s whale spots” (Sunday Times, of March 7).
We went on a trip to Kalpitiya last month and saw both whales and dolphins. The dolphins were frolicking around, some curving up and leaping into the air.
There was a lot of activity among them and I had an uneasy feeling that the creatures were panicking because of our sudden appearance in their tranquil surroundings, in fuel-smelling noisy motor boats.
If this spot is to be a tourist attraction, we should plan it in a way that does not intrude into dolphin/whale territory and that we do not in any way disturb them or cause them distress.
