Rain disappoints riders, drivers and fans at Diyatalawa

Foxhill Supercross

Rain marred the proceedings of the 18th Foxhill Supercross meet held at the SLMA motor racing track in Diyatalawa yesterday. The start of the meet in the morning promised to be an entertaining day of thrills and spills for the participants and the large crowd that had thronged to witness the proceedings.
But it was not to be as conditions due to bad weather later in the day disappointed the spectators and also the participants. Eventually it ended with the organizers being forced to call off the meet. However

they were able to conduct 17 events from the 27 that was scheduled for the day. Majority of the races that were completed was in the motorcycle category with 11 races being completed and six in the motor car category. But the biggest disappointment was that the spectators were denied or missed the best motor car racing event which were the two Supercar events where all the top Sri Lanka drivers were slotted to contest.

Nevertheless the organizers were able to finish off the main events in the motorcycle category which was the Racing 125 upto 250cc events where Indian rider C.S. Santosh showed his class having eaten humble pie to Sri Lanka's champion Gayan Sandaruwan at the Sigiriya Supercross recently. Santosh riding in his TVS RTR250cc bike won the two events but underwent some anxious moments while Sandaruwan was unfortunate as he got stuck in the thick mud which put paid his chances of putting up a challenge.

Santosh's two wins saw him taking the Maj Gen. Percy Fernando memorial trophy for the best rider of the day. The prize for the best driver of the meet was not awarded as the two main events were not held.
Meanwhile apart from Santosh there were two other riders Nuwan Dassanayake and Dinesh Anuruddha who were successful in bagging two wins each with Nuwan taking the Street Trail Racing upto 125cc and the same event for bikes of 125cc upto 250cc while Dinesh took both the Street Trail Motard 250cc and the open event.

In the junior category Akalanka Senadeera and Evon Gurusinghe took the Under 10 and 13 events while Shehan Adikari and Shanuka Sandaruwan shared the Race 1 and 2 events in the Under 16 category. Veteran Udesh Wedisinghe made a fine come back when he took the Super Motard 250cc race.
In the motor car category U.C. Perera had his first success at the Foxhill Supercross when he took the SLN Cars over 12 kg/hp event brushing aside the challenge from another veteran driver and Foxhill specialist Upulwan Serasinghe.

The others to win their events were W.M.K. Wickramasinghe the 1000cc Mini Car, S.A. Harsha the Nissan March 1000cc, Manjula Wijesinghe T&J Diesel 5500cc, Samin Attanayake SLA Cars upto 1500cc and Sajad Zuhair the SLH Cars upto 1600cc.
