Throughout the 1990’s and well into the 2000’s Andrea Boekel’s needlework projects enjoyed a popular following.
With an industry employing poor village women, in a remote corner of the North Western Province, these exquisite tablecloths, runners, cushion covers and pillowcases were lovingly hand made and exported to boutique stores in Europe. The exports suffered due to a downturn in the economies, however, the industry still remains. Andrea is proud to say that many of her staff have worked with her for 20 years.
Although domiciled in Australia now, Andrea runs the industry in her words “by remote control”. Because the women have no other skill, she still maintains their employment. A sale of these beautiful handmade items, will be held on Saturday, August 14 at No 16, Kinross Avenue, Colombo 4. On sale will be the elegant white and ecru table linen adorned with timeless Brussels Lace, intricate embroidery and other embellishments. What is also a bonus for the discerning home maker is that these items are reasonably priced well within the reach of everybody.
The sale begins at 9 a.m. and will run for just one day. |
