Puppies have similar qualities to human babies. They too need love and protection. Puppies are very playful. Therefore they are perfect playmates to children.

The tiny puppies are born with their eyes and ears closed. Their vision and hearing begin to develop by the third week. During its first twelve days, the pup is totally dependent on its mother. At this stage all it can do is drink milk and sleep. The mother should clean, protect and educate them.

Puppies are born without teeth. Their temporary teeth start growing at three weeks. At this stage they need more nutrition and they must start eating solid food. By five weeks they will start exploring the outside world. By eight weeks they become capable to learn about its surrounding.

Puppies are intelligent and can easily learn commands and tricks. From weeks 5 – 12, it should start being socialized with humans. Puppies should meet dogs of several sizes in order to socialize. By 12 weeks they will start playing, fighting and learning their skills.

A journey by train

By Mohammed Rawzan (Grade 5), Royal Int., School, Kurunegala

I once went to Badulla by train. I went with my parents. My uncle also joined the trip. We left by morning train. We had our breakfast in the train. The train was running at high speed. After passing Gampaha the train stopped suddenly. The passengers looked out from the windows. Later we came to know that a bull was knocked by the train and was thrown to the nearby field.

When we reached Nawalapitiya we were hungry and we opened up our lunch parcels. By now we were going through long and short tunnels. The train was passing tea estates. We saw waterfalls far away.

Passing all these beautiful sceneries we reached Badulla railway station. It was half an hour late due to the accident that occurred at Gampaha.

Good deeds we do return to us

By Rovina Fernando (8 years), Gateway College, Kandy

Once upon a time there lived a small family. They always helped animals. But the little son of the family gave trouble to his parents. He played with fire and never listened to his parents.

One day the family went on a jungle safari. They saw many animals. Then they came across a sick elephant. There was a nail pricked on its foot. The father helped the elephant to get well. The elephant was very happy.

Meanwhile, the small boy had set fire to the jungle. The jungle was burning. The parents scolded the boy and shouted for help.

Fortunately, the elephant they had helped came to their rescue and sprayed water from its trunk. After a while the fire died out. The elephant was tired, but the family was pleased with the elephant. If we do good to others, they will do good to us. But if we do bad to others, we will get it in return.
