Polythene pollution in Kandy

Despite appeals to the public to avoid using polythene materials during the Kandy Esala Maha Perahera, pilgrims and visitors have covered the pavements of Kandy with sheets of polythene to sit on and watch the festival.

Municipal cleaners have been busy over the last few days clearing the streets of polythene, which is non-biodegradable.
