Congratulations, our Sri Lankan Math heroes

From our Kid Reporter Sandil Ranasinghe (10 years) Kid Reporter No. L - 01

The Sri Lanka Mathematics Olympiad Foundation (SLMOF) which sends senior students (under 20) to the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) Competitions each year, has received an invitation for the first time this year from Taiwan to attend the International Mathematics Competition (IMC) 2010, held in Korea for Junior (Under 16) students.

Mr. Chanakya Wijeratna, CEO of the SLMOF and former head and senior lecturer of the Mathematics Department at Colombo University, put much effort to find eight of the students from all parts of Sri Lanka including Jaffna, Trincomalee and Batticaloa. Thereafter, he spared a lot of his valuable time to train these eight students.

There were two teams named A and B, which were led by Chanakya Sir and Deputy Leader A. B. K. Fernando.

The Sri Lankan participants were as follows:

  • Bharatha Rankothge of Dharmaraja College, Kandy
  • Kanchana Ranasinghe of Royal College, Colombo
  • Sameera Wijayawardhane of St.Thomas’ Girls’ High School, Matara
  • Mevan Wijewardana of Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala
  • Hiruni Kothalawala of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo
  • Chamath Jayakody of Dharmaraja College, Kandy
  • Sathira Tennakoon of Mahinda College, Galle
  • Janathan of St. John’s College, Jaffna

Three-hundred and fifty-six students from 26 countries such as China, Australia and Canada, have participated in the IMC held in Incheon, Korea from July 25 – 29, 2010.

The Sri Lankan IMC team came back with nine bronze medals. Kanchana Ranasinghe won a bronze medal for individual contest receiving 62 marks, while Sameera, Mevan, Chamath and Sathira received
honourable mentions.

The A team won eight bronze medals for group contests and team contests. We Sri Lankans can be very proud of their achievements as this is the first time Sri Lanka won so many medals at an international
mathematics competition for juniors.

Below are the ideas of Kanchana Ranasinghe about the competition.

Q: What do you think about your achievement?

A: I think it was wonderful to win nine medals. Actually, Chanakya Sir with the support of our deputy leader Buddhima and his colleague Supun helped us a lot to have this achievement. I would also take this opportunity to thank them on behalf of our team and all our parents.

Q: What kind of experience did you get there?

A: This is the first time I participated in an international competition such as this. I think I gained much knowledge and experience from this tour and also met foreign friends. We were able to study a lot about Korea and many other countries from the cultural show and site visits.

I think that the experience has left us with so many happy memories. I congratulate them and hope that they will be able to achieve many more victories like this in the future and would like to invite all other students to participate for future events.
