A major housing programme is to be started next year to construct over 100,000 houses throughout the island, Housing Minister Wimal Weerawansa said.
He told the Sunday Times that the programme, to be completed in five years, will benefit an estimated 1.2 million people.
The houses would be given to public servants and others at subsidized prices.
In the Colombo area a committee would be established to negotiate with the Urban Development Authority, so that the construction would be done according to urban standards and objectives, he said.
The construction of the housing complexes, if they are large in scale, would be carried out by contractors who would be selected by tender. Houses that would be built in rural areas, would be constructed with the help of local labour.
The costs of the construction are to be met by foreign and local capital. Government funds would not be used, he said.
The distribution of the houses, once constructed, would be done according to certain criteria. The occupants of a housing scheme would be given the responsibility to direct the affairs of the scheme once it is completed, he added. |
