SLMA backs exam to test foreign qualified docs

The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) has backed the holding of the Examination of Registration to Practice Medicine (ERPM) stating that it is mandatory to continue holding the examinations in order to maintain the quality of the medical profession in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) holds these examinations for all foreign medical graduates before registering them in order to assess whether the required levels of competency have been attained in their studies abroad.

SLMA president Dr. Narada Warnasuriya stated that it is an important responsibility for a regulatory body such as the SLMC to test graduates before registering them to ensure that they have the necessary skill to diagnose patients correctly.

These examinations are also held in most other countries including USA, UK, Australia and in Asian countries such as India, Malaysia and Singapore.

Dr. Warnasuriya added that with the internationally renowned high standards of healthcare in Sri Lanka it was important for the regulatory body to take all precautions to ensure that the standards remain high.
