GDL premieres latest film

Marking the final day of ‘G. D. L. in Retrospective’ which features a series of creations made by veteran filmmaker, teledrama director and playwright G. D. L. Perera will premier his latest, a DVD film ‘Lakshmi Maya Saha Sugath’ at the Namel Malani Punchi Theatre today, October 3 at 5.30 pm.

At the three-day festival started on October 1, the theatrical productions, miniplays and cinema creations of the veteran artiste who is responsible for introducing a large number of well-known stars to Sri Lankan stage and cinema were shown and today his English film production ‘Peter of the Elephants’ which was made in 1980 will be screened at 9.30 am and his stage play ‘Thotupala’ will be shown at 2.30 pm. The entrance will be free of charge and will be on a first come first served basis.

Starring Joe Abeywickrema, Felix Premawardena, Malani Fonseka, Geethanjalee, Nihal Jayawardena, Kingsley Madawela and Navanandana Wijesinghe ‘Peter of the Elephants’ is filmed by Sumiththa Amarasinghe while veteran music director Nimal Mendis joined in the music direction.

‘Thotuopala’ is a play staged in the 1960s and became the Best Play in the year 1964. ‘Lakshmi Maya Saha Sugath’ (admission is only for invitees) is a DVD film produced by the Meda Dumbara Kalagaraya under the direction of G. D. L.

GDL was the producer of award winning stage plays ‘Sakkarawattang’, ‘Mehew Lokeka’ and ‘Thotupola’ and also the creator of internationally screened films ‘Saama’, ‘Dahasak Sithuvili’ and ‘Romeo Juliet Kathawak’ and producer of the tele production “Ratagiya Aththo”.

Having been in England for 30 years and retiring from BBC where he worked G.D.L. returned to Sri Lanka in 2000 with the aim of making a studio complex. But unable to pursue his dream, G. D. L. started ‘Meda Dumbara Kalagaraya’ in Karalliyadda a remote village in Kandy to tap the hidden talents of youngsters.
