The proud little popsicle

By Manoshi de Silva

The little Popsicle was put inside a freezer. As soon as the door closed he opened his little eyes and looked around blinking. He saw a bunch of new faces staring at him in surprise. “Who are you?” asked a fish from the far end of the freezer. “I am the little Popsicle!” he said proudly looking around him.
“I came here from a shop filled with lovely, colourful goodies. I had a lot of friends there. There were popsicles in every colour and flavour you could possibly imagine. We all played and had a grand time”.

He looked around him. Other than the fish, there was also an ice-tray and a big tub of ice-cream.“Nothing interesting in this freezer,” said the little Popsicle pulling up a face. “I see there’s no one here good enough to be my friend.”“I am also quite like you, you know…” began the ice-cream tub trying to make friends.

“Not so! Not so!” shouted the little Popsicle “I can see through your lid that you are half empty. esides….” he continued, “You’re just vanilla flavoured. Not unique like me!”“Well, what flavour are you?” asked the ice-tray. “I am strawberry flavoured,” answered the little Popsicle very proudly and started to insult the poor ice-tray.

“You are made of just plain water you know. And unlike me you have no colour, flavour or even a smell.”
The ice-tray hid in a corner ashamed. The fish sniffed the Popsicle. “Mmm…You do smell nice!” he said.
“Get away! Get away!” screamed the little Popsicle “You smell horrid! Just get away from me!”
The fish too moved away annoyed by the little Popsicle.

“I’m so colourful and I smell great,” boasted the little Popsicle “No one is as cool as me! This place is too boring and smelly for me.”“Well, no one is keeping you in here by force,” answered the
irritated ice-cream tub, for you see by now everyone else in the freezer had had enough of the proud
little Popsicle.

“That’s just it!” cried the proud little Popsicle “I am going away in search of a place good enough for
someone as great as me.” He pushed out the freezer door and before anyone could say anything, he jumped out, closing the door behind him.

“Where am I?” the little Popsicle looked around him. He was in the middle of a kitchen. The pots and pans gathered around him for they have never seen anything like him before. “Get away! Get away!” shouted the little Popsicle. “None of you are good enough to be my friend.

You are all dirty looking and very dark coloured.” The poor pots and pans turned down their heads unhappily. “But what is so great about you?” “Who asked that?” snapped the little Popsicle.
“I did!” said the shiny kettle. The kettle was very annoyed by the way the little Popsicle insulted
everyone in the kitchen.

“Why, you are just a kettle!” said the little Popsicle turning up his arrogant little nose. The kettle started to boil in anger. Steam started to spray through his nose. “There’s steam coming out of your nose,” laughed the naughty little Popsicle. “You are just hot and sweaty. But look at how cool I am! Look at my colour. I am strawberry flavoured. Bet you haven’t even heard of it…” he went on.

As he kept on boasting about himself, his voice became smaller and smaller until it turned into a tiny little whisper. “Hey! What’s going on…” He tried to scream but it was difficult to hear his voice.

Alas! The silly little Popsicle was melting. He was too busy boasting about himself that he forgot all about the danger of leaving the freezer and now he was turning into a little puddle.

Everyone felt sad for not being able to help him. But they all agreed, that had he not been so proud of
himself, none of this would have happened.
